Activision announced that Call of Duty Black Ops 2 had a record opening day, selling $500 million at retail in the first 24 hours of release. This breaks the previous record held by Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 that was released this time last year. This marks the fourth consecutive year that a Call of Duty game has become the biggest entertainment launch in history. In the press release, CEO Bobby Kotick went on to say that
"Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for 'Harry Potter' and 'Star Wars', the two most successful movie franchises of all time."
US retailer GameStop announced yesterday that they had sold 1 million copies alone and the game was also the most pre-ordered game ever on Amazon.com. These figures are staggering and Activision believes Black Ops 2 should surpass the first five day total of $775 million that MW3 sold.
Activision will look to keep this trend going as there have already been rumors that 2013 will bring us Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward.
